n the realm of spiritual warfare against demonic spirits, I believe there are 4 basic levels in which an individual believer may have to face – depending on what you may be dealing with in your present set of circumstances and what you may have in your past background.

Having the specific knowledge on what each one of these 4 levels are all about can really help you in being able to plan and carry out the appropriate battle strategy in which to defeat demons should they ever move in for an attack on either you or any of your close loved ones.

But before I get into exactly what these four areas are, I want to give you some very basic verses from the Bible showing you the importance that God the Father is placing on that we realize the reality of demonic spirits in this world, and that we not be afraid to engage and cast them out of people when we do run across them in this life.

Here are 8 very powerful verses from the Bible, all showing us that we are not to be afraid of demons, and that we are to directly engage with them if we have to, operating under God’s authority and anointing to be able to do so.

  1. And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe. In my name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues, they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover.” (Mark 16:15-18)
  2. “Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee … the Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor, He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preachdeliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:14-18)
  3. “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” (Luke 10:19)
  4. “Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.” (Luke 9:1)
  5. “And He called the twelve to Him, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits … And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.” (Mark 6:7,13)
  6. “And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.” (Matthew 10:1)
  7. “But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:6-8)
  8. “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8)

If you will notice, every time Jesus gave His apostles the power and command to go out and walk with His anointing, He always told them to cast out demons as one of His specific commands – no exceptions!

So if Jesus was constantly casting out demons, always telling the apostles to cast out demons, and the apostles too were always casting out demons, then it should only be logical that the Church should continue to still cast out demons when needed.

It has been estimated by many Bible scholars that approximately 25% of the miracles Jesus had performed were Him casting demons out of people. Satan and his demons are not confined to the Bottomless Pit at this time. This event will not happen until Jesus returns back to us in His second coming. Until that event happens, Satan and his demons are still free to roam in the “air” seeking who they are going to try and devour next.

As Christians, we always have to remember that the devil and his demons are already defeated foes. Jesus has already defeated Satan at the cross when He was crucified.

What is now left is that all Christians have to realize that the victory is already ours. We thus have to learn how to engage and defeat the devil and his demons when they do try to move in on a person or a situation – and sometimes this means a real live deliverance – because demons can attach themselves to people when they do move in for an attack. And once they do, the only way to be able to drive them out is by the power of God!

Before I get into the four specific areas in which demons will try and come against people, especially Christians, there is one more big debate going on right now in the Body of Christ about how far demons can go with Christians. This debate is whether or not a demon can actually enter in on the inside of a Christian.

Many believe that once you are saved and become born again, that demons cannot enter in on the inside of you. The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit will literally come in and enter in on the inside of your human spirit at the moment of your conversion with Jesus. As a result of our bodies now becoming the temple of the Holy Spirit, they believe there is no way that a demon or a group of demons can enter in on the inside of your body.

At first glance, this does appear to be a very logical argument. However, what they are missing is the fact that the Bible tells us that we have three, distinct, separate parts to our being. We have a body, a soul, and a spirit. The Holy Spirit is living and dwelling in your human spirit, but He is not living up in your soul or body area.

If a Christian ends up committing a severe, door-opening sin and transgression against the Lord giving the demons full legal right to be able to directly attack him, then what the demons will try and do if they can get away with it is try and enter into that person’s body and soul. They will not be able to enter into the Christian’s spirit because the Holy Spirit is already living in there. But they will be able to enter into the body and soul of that person if the transgression has been deemed to be severe enough by the Lord.

Talk to any deliverance minister who does deliverances on a regular basis, and every single one of them will tell you that demons can enter in on the inside of a Christian, and that they then have to be cast out of them by way of an actual deliverance. In fact, they cannot cast the demons out of a person unless that person is a Christian to begin with, or unless that person is willing to become a Christian if they are not saved.

If an unsaved person has demons living and operating on the inside of them, they will have no spiritual authority to be able to cast the demons out of them. This kind of deliverance is only available for born-again Christians.

One of the things Christians can do to totally safeguard themselves from ever having a demon try to enter in on the inside of them is to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. We have an article in the Bible Basics section of our site on exactly what this gift is all about and how to properly receive it.

What happens with this second experience is that the Holy Spirit will release from your spirit and come up and enter into your soul. Once the Holy Spirit is residing in both your spirit and soul areas, then the demons will not be able to enter into your soul since the Holy Spirit is now living in there as a result of having received this gift.

This is why after a Christian gets delivered from demons, a deliverance minister will try and get the person to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit – to help safeguard and prevent the demons from ever being able to get back in on the inside of that person ever again.

This debate has been going on for a long time in the Body of Christ and will obviously never be resolved anytime in the near future. The only thing that I can personally tell you is that I have come across quite a few Christians who have had demons literally dwelling on the inside of them and they all had to have the demons cast out of them by way of an actual deliverance.

At the end of this article, I will give you a list of the best books ever written on the subject of deliverance and engaging with demons. Each one of these books have been written by very creditable, anointed men and women of God who have learned much in this area of spiritual warfare. And what you will find out very quickly when reading from each one of them is that they have all found out in the real battlefields of life where this kind of activity does exist, that Christians can draw demons on the inside of them if the demons have the appropriate legal rights to be able to enter in.

As I get into the four specific areas where demons can directly attack a Christian, you will see me break this down into two very basic areas. If demons come in for an attack, they will either try and attack you from an outside position, which means they are attacking you from the “air.” When they are attacking you from an outside position, they are not on the inside of your body or soul. These attacks are coming at you from the outside of your being.

The other position that demons can attack you is from the inside position, which means they are attacking you from the inside of your body. And if they are on the inside of your body being able to attack you from this inside position, then something has happened that has given them the legal right to be able to enter in on the inside of you.

Your job will then be to find out what their legal right is so that you can get it properly broken before God the Father. Once you have properly broken all of their legal rights before God the Father, then you can turn around and command them to now leave you in the name of Jesus.

But whether you are dealing with demons attacking you from an outside position or from an inside position – the rules are still the same. Find out what their legal rights are, properly break those legal rights before God the Father, and then turn around and verbally cast all of them out in the name of your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

As much as I hate to say this, there is a real war game going on between God and the devil for all of our souls. And in this war game are real, live, demonic spirits who will come after people, especially Christians – and they will try to get away with inflicting as much death, terror, destruction, and oppression as they possibly can.

This is why the Bible is telling us that we are to resist the devil – that we are to cast out demons when and where needed – and that we are to become good soldiers of Jesus Christ. We are to be as bold as lions, and we are to learn how to walk in the anointing of God so that we can properly use the power and authority that God has already given to each one of us through His Holy Spirit.

The Bible makes it very clear as to what kind of big picture we all have to deal with. Each Christian thus has to make up their own personal mind as to how they will deal with this big picture and the war games that are really going on behind the scenes between God and the devil. The apostle Paul could not have said it any better when he said that our real battle in this life is not with flesh and blood, but with principalities and powers, which are demons and demon powers.

You can either learn how to rise up and walk with the anointing and power of God in your life so as to be able to do battle against your enemies, whether they be demons or other evil people – or you can choose to hide your head in the sand and let demons and other evil people keep tearing you and your family to pieces.

We have another article in the “Spiritual Warfare” section of our site titled, “Battle Verses of the Bible.” In this article, I give you 100 of the best battle verses from the Bible showing you that God the Father is a “Man of War,” that He does have a war side to His personality, and that He will not hesitate to go into battle for you and your close loved ones if you are willing to stand up and fight your enemies as a true soldier of Jesus Christ. But before God can go into battle for you, you will first have to be willing to march onto that battlefield and face your enemy head on like David did with Goliath. The choice is yours.

In the “Testimonies” section of our site, we have several powerful testimonies from people who were taught how to directly engage with their enemies, and in several of these cases, their enemies were demonic spirits. These people were all getting torn apart with what these demons were able to get away with – and this was all occurring because they did not know how to directly engage with them and how to drive them off them and their current situation.

Once we showed them how to go on the offensive and directly engage with these demons, every single one of them received complete and total deliverance – and in most of the cases, deliverance came within 24-48 hours. This is how powerful a thing it really is if you can learn how to go on the offensive against your enemies by operating under the authority, power, and guidance of God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ.

Now onto the four different areas you may have to face when dealing with any type of direct attacks from demonic spirits.

1. Demons Attacking – With No Legal Right To Be Doing So

For most Christians, this first level will be the one they will probably have to face the most from time to time. This first level is when a demon or a group of demons start to attack you from an outside position with no real legal right to be doing so.

Jesus Himself had to face Satan head on with this kind of an outside attack when God led Him into the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights. In that wilderness setting, Satan was allowed to literally tempt Jesus with three specific temptations.

If God allowed His Son to be tempted in this manner, then you know the chances are very good that many of us will have to face this same kind of demonic attack from time to time from this same kind of outside position.

We already have another article in our site titled, “Battle Command Against Demonic Spirits”in the “Spiritual Warfare” section of our site. In this article, I show you exactly how to deal with a demonic attack coming at you from this kind of an outside position. I also give you a good, basic, simple battle command that you can use to drive any demons off you that are attempting to come directly against you.

Jesus has already given us His power, His anointing, and His authority to cast out demons and to trample over all the power of our enemies. It simply is a matter of each and every Christian being willing to take up his sword, which is the Word of God, and verbally command the demons to leave you in the name of Jesus Christ. It really is that simple in this first level of spiritual warfare in dealing direct with any kind of demonic attack.

2. Demons Attacking – As a Result of a Legal Right To Be Able To Do So

In this second level, things start to get much heavier. This second level is when demons start to come in for an attack, but this time they have a full legal right to be able to do so.

This is the realm that gets many Christians in trouble with demons. What happens in this second level is that the Christian has given some kind of legal right for the demons to be able to launch a full scale attack against them.

The Bible tells us from the Book of Job that we apparently have some kind of protective hedge around us that protects us from demonic spirits. If we did not have this kind of protective hedge, then you can bet that many more Christians would be coming under direct demonic attack. Here is the verse:

“Have You not made a HEDGE around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side?” (Job 1:10)

As a result of this protective hedge, there appears to be some kind of spiritual law in operation that demons have to abide by. They may occasionally be able to come against you as described in level one, but they can easily be cast off from you by just issuing a good, basic, battle command – telling them they now have to leave you in the name of Jesus Christ once you realize that it really is them that have been attacking you.

However, what demons do is just wait for any Christian to cause a hole to occur in their protective hedge. And how do you cause a hole to occur in your protective hedge giving demons a legal right to be able to come directly after you? By engaging and crossing over into any direct sins and transgressions that are expressly forbidden by God the Father in His Word.

Obviously not every sin and transgression will cause a hole to occur in your protective hedge with the Lord. The Bible tells us that we are all sinners and that we have all fallen short of the glory of our God. This is why Jesus had to come down to die on the cross – to pay the penalty for all of those sins, and to be able to give us full forgiveness and a full pardon for all of our sins. If demons had a legal right to be coming after us every single time we sinned or transgressed, then none of us would ever be safe from their attacks, and we would all be in a state of constant warfare with them.

However, what many deliverance ministers have found out in the actual battlefields when having to deal direct with real live demons – is that there are certain sins and transgressions that will give demons the legal right to be able to launch a full scale attack against a person, even if that person is already a Christian!

Once you become saved and born again through the Blood that Jesus has already shed for you on the cross, this does not give you the right or the license to be able to keep on sinning.

Though we have all been made perfectly righteous in the eyes of God as a result of Jesus’ righteousness now being imputed to us, we still have to make every effort on our end to stay on the righteous side of the fence in our walk with our Lord. We have to do the best we can to try and live righteous lives and stay out of any serious sins and transgressions against our Lord – especially those of the heavier kind that will be listed below.

In this area of spiritual warfare, there are certain types of sins and transgressions that will give demons the legal right to be able to come directly after you if God should so choose to allow this to happen. If you choose to engage in some of these heavier sins, then you could possibly break the protective hedge that you have around you with the Lord.

The demons will then be quick to see that opening when it does occur, and they will waste no time in trying to come directly after you. Demons just wait for people, especially Christians, to cross over into any kind of door-opening, hedge-breaking sin and transgression, which will then give them the full legal right to be able to launch an all-out, full scale attack on that person and their life.

When looking at what some of these kinds of sins and transgressions are, the first thing you will notice is that they are a much heavier type of sin and transgression.

Here are some of the heavier sins and transgressions, if committed with any type of frequency or intensity, that can get you into major trouble with the Lord where He will then pull back His hand of protection and cause a major hole to occur in your hedge – which will then give demons the full legal right to be able to start coming directly after you for a major attack.

As Christians, we can have absolutely no part in any of the following areas:

  1. The occult
  2. False religions or cults
  3. Any part of the New Age Movement
  4. The homosexual lifestyle
  5. Any type of Satan worshiping group
  6. Any involvement with abortion or the abortion industry
  7. Abusing alcohol
  8. Doing any type of drugs – including pot
  9. Any type of extreme verbal and/or physical abuse on your mate or children
  10. Any type of promiscuous, sexual lifestyle
  11. Any type of criminal activity
  12. Murder
  13. Bringing a cursed object into your home

If you will notice, all of these sins and transgressions are things that you have to do operating out of your own free will and volition against the Lord. These are not things that are being done to you or against you – these are all sins that you are doing and committing against the Lord all on your own volition. In other words, these are all direct willful sinsbeing done against the Lord.

Each one of these areas are major, I repeat, major door openers to the dark side. All of these sins and behaviors are totally unacceptable in the eyes of God and He will not put up with any of His own engaging in any of this kind of activity!

In the areas having to do with the occult, we have another article in our site titled, “Dangers of the Occult.” In this article, I give you all of the main verses from the Bible that will tell us that none of us can engage with anything having to do with the occult, and that if we do, we will risk having God set His face directly against us.

Deliverance ministers who deal with demons on a regular basis have all found out that some of the more evil and wicked demons in Satan’s hierarchy are demons that have attached to someone as a result of that person delving into some area of the occult. This is why God has given all of us such strict warnings in His Word that we can have absolutely nothing to do with any area of the occult – no exceptions!

If you have drawn demons into your life as a result of engaging in one or more of the above door-opening sins, then what you will have to do before you can cast the demons out of your life is that you will have to fully break all of their legal rights.

You will first have to realize that you have been sinning and transgressing directly against God by delving into any of the above areas. Once you have full realization and understanding that these are all unacceptable sins and behaviors before God, then you will have to go before God, fully confess out each one of the transgressions as actual sins, and then fully renounce each one of them – telling God that you will never, ever go back into any of them ever again.

Then once each of these sin areas have been fully confessed and fully renounced before the Lord – then you can turn around, take the authority that God has given to you to trample over all the power of your enemy, and cast the demons off you for good.

What happens to some Christians, once they realize they have drawn demons into their lives as a result of being involved in some of the above sin areas – is that they will first try and cast the demons out before breaking their legal rights with God the Father. If you try and do this before you properly break their legal rights before God the Father, they will not go!

The reason for this is that they know they still have the full legal right to stay attached to you since their legal rights have not been properly confessed out, renounced, and broken before God the Father.

In the “Spiritual Warfare” section of our site, we have another article titled, “Battle Prayer to Break Legal Rights of Demons.” In this article, I give you a good, basic, battle prayer on how to go before God the Father and fully break all of the demon’s legal rights by properly confessing and renouncing these types of heavier sins.

In this article is a battle prayer that I had given to another woman who had drawn heavy demonic activity into her life as a result of engaging in some very heavy sins. This woman has given me permission to release the exact prayer that I had given to her so as to be able to help other people who may be having the same kind of problems with demons.

To any of you who may have drawn heavy demonic activity in your life as a result of engaging in some of these heavier sins – remember – the only sin that cannot be forgiven is a direct blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. All other sins and transgressions can be forgiven, no matter how bad, how vile, and how severe you think they may be.

If you are truly sorry for having engaged in this kind of activity, fully willing to confess and renounce all of this activity before God the Father – then God can fully forgive you and fully deliver you from these demons and restore order back into your life. This is not a hopeless situation.

The Bible tells us that God the Father is no respecter of persons – which means what He will do for one, He will do for another. God has an equal and unconditional love for each person He has created, and He will thus work equally with each person who is willing to come to Him for their deliverance.

We have come across plenty of people who have drawn heavy demonic activity into their lives, and all of them were able to get fully delivered from the demons once they were taught how to fully break their legal rights.

For those of you who may be battling this kind of spiritual problem, I would highly recommend that you read my article titled “Battle Prayer to Break Legal Rights of Demons,” and then form out your own personal battle prayer to God the Father to handle your personal situation.

Once you have fully broken all of the legal rights that the demons have been feeding and operating on, then you will be able to turn around and verbally command them to now leave you in the name of Jesus Christ. In this article, I give you both the prayer to go to God the Father with to break their legal rights, along with a good, basic, battle command to drive the demons off you for good!

This will now lead us into the third level of spiritual warfare when having to deal with the reality of demonic spirits invading our lives.

3. Demons Attacking – As a Result of What Someone Else May Have Done to You

This particular area has always been one of the most bothersome areas that I have ever come across when investigating and researching this part of our walk with the Lord. It’s one thing to draw demons in on you as a result of your own sins and transgressions that you have committed against the Lord. Most of the time in that area, you have nobody to blame but yourself for choosing to cross over into areas that you knew were forbidden territory by the Lord in the first place.

But this now brings us into the third major level when having to deal with direct attacks from demons. What happens in this area is that sometimes demons will be allowed to come in and attach themselves to a person as a result of what someone else may have done to that person.

Some examples of this would be women who have been raped, people who have been ritually abused in Satanic groups, people who have been victims of certain types of crimes and assault, women who may have been severely physically abused by their husbands or boyfriends, and children who have been severely abused by one or both parents – either physically, verbally, or sexually.

When I first came across this phenomenon, I wondered why God could allow demons to attach themselves to people who have been horribly abused or wronged by another person. This person was usually completely innocent of sinning or transgressing against God. So why would God allow demons to launch a full scale attack against the victim, especially if that victim is a born-again Christian? Christian woman are being raped, molested, and physically beaten every day across this country.

What happens in some of these types of extreme cases is that demons, once they see that person being physically violated to this kind of an extreme degree, will realize that there might be a hole in that person’s hedge. Once they see this kind of an opening, they will then try and move in to see if they can attach themselves to that person.

What demons are looking for in these kinds of extreme cases is what that person’s response is going to be to the violation. If a woman has been raped, the demons will see if that person will start to exhibit and manifest emotions of hate, anger, bitterness, and unforgiveness.

God will obviously allow the person to have some of these kinds of emotions right after all of this has occurred as a result of the initial knee-jerk reaction most of us would have to this kind of severe trauma. I do not believe the demons can get a foothold into that person right off the bat.

But if that person does not start to work themselves out of these kinds of negative emotions over a certain period of reasonable time, then the demons will have something they can attach themselves too, and that something are the negative emotions of hate, bitterness, and extreme anger that will settle in that person’s mind, spirit, and emotions over a certain period of time. And once the demons attach themselves to those kinds of negative emotions, they will then start to try and work it – trying to increase the frequency and intensity of those emotions.

If a person has drawn heavy demonic activity into their lives as a result of being the victim of some kind of extreme behavior from another person, then what that person will have to do before they can cast the demons out of them is to fully forgive the person who has viciously wronged them – no matter how evil and vicious that wrong may have been.

We have another article in our site titled, “How to Handle Negative Feelings When Wronged by Someone Else.” This article is in the Psychological Issues section of our site. In this article, I give you all of the appropriate Scripture verses on being able to deal with this kind of heavier problem.

The Bible tells us that whenever we get ready to stand before the Lord to pray to Him, that we have to be willing to fully forgive anyone else who has ever trespassed against us – and that will include any vicious criminal who may have raped, assaulted or robbed you, or any violent and psychotic boyfriend or husband who may have physically abused you.

The Bible tells us that if we do not forgive others who may have trespassed against us, then God will not be forgiving us when we trespass against others. And then to top it off, God may not even be willing to hear any of our personal prayers with the way He has this particular verse worded. And if He won’t hear any of our personal prayers, then we may have little or no chance on getting delivered from any type of demonic attack that may have come our way.

The first thing any good deliverance minister will do on these types of heavier cases is to make sure the person will be willing to fully forgive all of the people who have seriously wronged them in this life. Until this person is willing to fully forgive all of their trespassers, the demons cannot be cast out.

The demons have been feeding off those negative emotions for quite some time and as a result, a mental stronghold has developed in that person’s mind and thinking. To start God’s inner healing process, this person has to be willing to fully forgive the person or people who may have hurt them in these more extreme types of cases.

Once the person is willing to fully forgive all of their trespassers in the eyes of God, then that person can turn around and verbally engage with the demons, telling them that they now have to leave them in the name of Jesus Christ.

4. Demons Attacking – As a Result of a Generational Curse Line

Another very disturbing area in the realm of having to do battle with demonic spirits is the area where demons can sometimes jump from abusive and dysfunctional parents onto some of the children – trying to get some of the children to manifest the same aberrant and dysfunctional behavior of their parents.

A perfect example of this would be a severe alcoholic parent. The children grow up seeing and watching their parent live a good portion of their married life in this state. As a result of that parent crossing over into this kind of heavier sin area with the Lord, demons will be allowed to come in and attach themselves to the alcoholic parent. And once they attach themselves to the alcoholic parent, they will then look to see if they can target anyone else in the family to attack.

Again, the children are completely innocent. They themselves are not an alcoholic. They have done nothing themselves to draw the demons onto their alcoholic parent. So why would God allow the demons to be able to jump onto some of the children to try and get them to do the same thing they have been able to get their dysfunctional parent to do?

In some of these types of extreme cases, one or two of the children could end up becoming alcoholics themselves. What is happening behind the scenes in the spiritual realm is that the demons will try and get some of the children to move into this same kind of extreme activity, especially as they get older and move into their own marriages.

Demons cannot make you do anything. You will always have your free will to choose whether or not you will act out on their evil suggestions and promptings. All demons can do is try and persuade you to cross over into these kinds of extreme realms.

Many children who end up crossing over into some of these same extreme areas are really operating under heavy demonic influence. This is a perfect example of God telling us in His Word that His people will go into captivity for having lack of knowledge. Many children are crossing over into the same extreme realms that their parents were walking in as a result of not having the appropriate knowledge to fully understand what is really going on behind the scenes in the spiritual realm.

Once again, God the Father gives us some keen insight from His Word as to why this kind of activity is being allowed to happen in some families. God tells us in His Word that the sins of the fathers can be visited down to 3 or 4 generations of future children.

Here is the verse where God is making this specific statement. This verse is from one of the actual 10 commandments, the second commandment.

“You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.” (Exodus 20:4-6)

Notice in this verse that God is using the word “visiting” – visiting the sins and iniquities of the father directly onto the children, traveling as far down as 3 or 4 generations of these future children.

What does God mean by the word “visiting?” I believe what God may be trying to tell us is that there will be severe consequences for certain types of sins and iniquities committed by parents of children. The Bible tells us that the “wages” of sin will be death.

If the father of a family is an extreme alcoholic, then the family could end up living in a miserable, oppressive and terrible environment. As a result of this kind of severe transgression against the Lord, the family could end up living in poverty.

As a result of living in poverty, the children may end up not getting the best education or the better opportunities to progress and grow into what God may have been calling them to become in Him in the first place. As a result of being raised up in this kind of a poor and oppressive environment, some of these children will never find God and what His purpose and divine plan would have been for their lives.

Some of them may end up becoming alcoholics themselves. And then from there, they will marry, and then they will end up treating everyone in their families in the same way their fathers had treated them. And then they have children, their children see and watch their dysfunctional behavior, and then some of them end up repeating the same behavior as they grow older and move into their own marriages.

You thus have the sin of one father being visited down several generations – all because no one knew how to break the curse line that had developed as result of the original sin from the first sinning alcoholic father.

All of this kind of negative activity could perfectly describe what God is trying to tell us in this verse. And then to possibly top it off, you have demons who will come in and feed off this kind of extreme behavior through the alcoholic parent, making everyone else’s life in the family miserable as a result. You walk into these kinds of houses, and you can literally feel yourself walking into a dark oppressive cloud.

What happens in this kind of scenario in reference to actual demonic activity is that demons will target some of the children to go after. They will try and attach themselves to the child at an early age and start to try and pull them into this darker way of living.

If that child is a born-again Christian, they will try and sever the child’s personal relationship with the Lord. They will attack their mind, their emotions, and their sense of self-confidence and self-esteem. Many of these children grow up with low levels of self-esteem and self-confidence as a result of all the verbal abuse they have had to put up with from their dysfunctional parent or parents.

When the child gets old enough to leave the home, the demons will follow the child and will still try and stay attached to them. I have personally run across several woman who had demons following them into their adult life and literally attacking them on a periodic basis. They would then command the demons to leave them in the name of Jesus, but that would only work for a short period of time, and then the demons would come back for additional attacks.

What is happening in the spiritual realm behind the scenes is that the demons apparently have developed enough of a legal right to stay attached to that child as a result of the sins and transgressions of the original sinning parent. What the demons have now formed out as a result of the original parent’s severe transgressions against the Lord is a curse line between that parent and the child.

What this now means is that before you can cast the demons off you for good – you will first have to fully break the curse line that the demons have been feeding and operating on over all of those years from living with the original sinning parent.

We have another article in our site titled, Spiritual Warfare” section of our site.

In this article, I give you a step-by-step process on how to properly break a generational curse line that may have originated from a dysfunctional parent or parents. Once you properly break that curse line, then you can turn around and verbally engage with the demons and command them to now leave you in the name of Jesus Christ.

In this article, I also give you the exact battle prayer I drew up for a 16 year girl who had this exact problem – with demons literally attacking her from time to time – and sometimes quite severely as a result of the demons who were on her natural father. What these demons were attempting to do was to jump and transfer down to her so they could then form out that curse line, which would then make it easier for them to be able to follow, torment, and harass her as she was growing into her adult life.

This girl was spiritually wise beyond her years. She had a very close powerful walk with her Lord and Savior, and she had quite a bit of knowledge on spiritual warfare. But what she could not figure out was why these demons were being allowed to chase after her and torment her like they had been doing for quite a number of years.

Once I received the background information on her and her family, it was very easy to spot where the demons were coming from. This article will explain to you how the father got the demons on him in the first place – and then how they were attempting to jump and transfer from him onto his daughter to form out a curse line so they could then continue to chase and follow after her into her adult life.

I believe that our God is a God of perfect order. I believe there are reasons for everything. For those who are seekers with the Lord, I believe many of the times God will give you answers as to why things are the way they are and why certain things happen the way they do.

Though we are all stuck with having to deal with the reality of demonic spirits in this life as a result of the curse Adam and Eve brought upon this earth, there is still a divine order in all of this and God is still running the entire show.

What I have personally found out in the area of spiritual warfare in having to deal direct with demonic spirits is that there are rules to the game, and there are limits as to how far they can go and how much they can get away with. For all Christians, there is complete deliverance from demons, no matter how bad and how hopeless the situation may look to you in the natural.

What we are trying to do with the spiritual warfare section of our site is to break these articles down accordingly so that you can pick and choose which ones will be best suited for the battle situation you may be forced to face.

In the area of having to deal direct with demons, I once again want to summarize your possible options per the articles we have done to date.

1.  If demons are attempting to attack, harass, or torment you from an outside position, but have no real legal right to be doing so, it would be our recommendation that you read our article titled, “Battle Command Against Demonic Spirits.” A good, simple, basic battle command against these demons should do the trick and you should be able to drive them off of you very easily and very quickly.

2.  If you have committed any type of door-opening sin and transgression against the Lord giving demons the full legal right to be able to come directly after you, we recommend that you read our article titled, “Battle Prayer to Break Legal Rights of Demons.”

Before you can verbally command the demons to leave you in the name of Jesus, you will first have to break their legal rights – and this article will give you a good, sample, battle prayer on how to properly do this with God the Father.

3.  If you have had someone violate, abuse, or harm you in any type of extreme way, and have drawn demons into your life as a result of what that person or persons may have done to you, it would be our recommendation that you first read our article titled, “How to Handle Negative Feelings When Wronged by Someone Else.”

After you read this article and have made a commitment to the Lord to fully forgive all of your trespassers, then you can form out your own personal battle command as mentioned in the first two articles above, and then cast the demons off you for good.

4.  If you have demons that have been nipping, attacking, tormenting or harassing you as a result of being raised up in a dysfunctional family where either one or both of your parents have committed some severe transgressions against the Lord, it would be our recommendation that you read our article titled, “Battle Prayer to Break a Generational Curse Line.”

This article will give you a step-by-step process on how to fully break the generational curse line that may have formed out from one or both of your dysfunctional parents – and then how to verbally command the demons to leave you in the name of Jesus Christ once you have properly broken that curse line with God the Father.

As I have said before, you do not want to get so paranoid and spooked that you are seeing demons around every possible corner. But you also do not want to take the other extreme position and turn a blind eye and keep your head in the sand ignoring the reality of demons and the different ways in which they will operate.

Many of God’s people are getting torpedoed and taken out of this life way too early as a result of not having the appropriate knowledge on spiritual warfare and how to do battle with their enemies – whether those enemies be demons or other evil people in this life.

The Bible has made it very clear. God’s Word has told us that we have all been called to be good soldiers of Jesus Christ. Notice that God is using the word “good soldiers.” When God is using the word “good soldiers,” I believe He is meaning exactly what He is trying to tell us. Good soldiers are warriors and they know how to directly engage with their enemies if they have too. They are strong, bold, and fearless.

God tells us in His Word that He wants us to be as bold as lions and that we are to directly engage and cast out demons when we have too. He tells us that if we faint in the day of any kind of adversity, that our strength will be considered small in His eyes.

Per all of the Scripture verses I listed at the top of this article, Jesus Himself had specifically told the apostles to cast out demons every single time He commissioned them to go out and walk with His anointing. We are to save, heal, teach, disciple, and cast out demons when we do run across these types of extreme situations.

I believe God is looking to raise up more well-rounded, anointed soldiers in these last days to battle some of the more increasing evil that we are starting to see more of. As we approach what I believe will be a coming Rapture, and then the coming of the 7 year Great Tribulation where this entire world will literally be ruled by a real, live, living Antichrist, I believe God will be pulling out all of the stops to try and get as many people saved and on that rapture train as He possibly can.

In order to do this, I believe God will be raising up an incredible army of anointed believers who will walk and fly with His supernatural power in a way that the world has never seen before and will never see again. Many of these anointed, chosen ones are being worked, trained, molded, and shaped right now into the eagles that God is calling them to become in Him.

For those of you who would like to read a direct prophecy on this coming army and what Jesus will be doing with this army, go to our article titled, “Prophecy from Jesus to Mary Baxter on Joel’s Army to Come” in the “Prophecies” section of our site. In this article is a direct word that Jesus gave to this woman on this coming army that He will be personally raising up, and some of the things that will be happening with this army.

Jesus says that this army will be the army of Joel as spoken by the prophet Joel in the Old Testament. In this article, I give you the full verse from the Book of Joel and the description that He gives of this army. He says this army will be the greatest army that God has ever raised up, that there never has been an army as mighty and powerful as this army is going to be, and that there will never be another one like it ever again.

I personally believe that this army could be coming out of our generation, and that our baby-boom generation may end up being the generation that will see and experience the Rapture.

For those of you who would like more detailed information in this area of spiritual warfare, here are 7 very good books on this subject that I would highly recommend, with all of them being written by very creditable, anointed men and women of God who are very experienced in this level of spiritual warfare and have learned much in the actual battlefields with demonic spirits.

All of these people are real pioneers in this area. The Bible tells us that we are to cast out demons, but it does not tell us exactly how to do it. Many of these people have had to learn how to do this all on their own as the Holy Spirit was guiding and teaching them along the way. As a result of all of their learning experiences, there is now an incredible amount of knowledge and revelation on this subject for those who want to learn more about it.

If I had to rate which one of these books would be considered the best at this time, I would definitely have to say the very first book I will list below. The title of this book is“Defeating Dark Angels” by Charles Kraft. This man gives the best, easiest, most logical, rational, and thorough analysis of this topic that I have seen to date. You cannot go wrong with this man’s teaching on this subject.

Two other books that are extremely good are “Healing Through Deliverance – Volumes 1 & 2″ by Peter Horrobin.

Here are seven of the best books the Body of Christ has to date on this subject:

  1. Defeating Dark Angels
By Charles H. Kraft / Gospel Light
  2. Healing through Deliverance, vol. 1: The Foundation of Deliverance Ministry
    By Peter Horrobin / Baker

  3. Healing through Deliverance, vol. 2: The Practice of Deliverance Ministry
    By Peter Horrobin / Baker

  4. How to Cast Out Demons: A Guide to the Basics
By Doris M. Wagner / Gospel Light

  5. Pigs in the Parlor
by Frank Hammond, Ida M. Hammond

  6. In The Name Of Satan How The Forces Of Evil Work And What You Can Do To Defeat Them
    by Bob Larson
  7. Larson’s Book of Spiritual Warfare
By Bob Larson / Thomas Nelson /

If any more good books on this subject become available, I will add them to this list.

We also have several other good books listed on this subject in the Christian Book section of our site. Just scroll down to the “Deliverance from Demons” section and you will see additional books listed on this topic that are also very good. But these seven are the best of the best in my own humble personal opinion.

Both my parents grew up on farms in rural Washington County, Georgia. As a result, they were able to pass along a treasure trove of country wisdom inherited from their parents and grandparents.

One of the pearls they were frequently prompted to share when I was a kid was “not to put the cart before the horse.” My folks wanted me to understand that the important challenges and opportunities of life require preparation and the proper ordering of priorities. Though in themselves these rudimentary steps aren’t always the most exciting or the most visible to others, the broader lessons they provide–perseverance, faithfulness and obedience–are vital to one’s ultimate success.

Truthfully, as a young girl given to much dreaming (day and night), I needed this counsel more times than I can remember. It was a known fact that I harbored more than a few lofty ideas about where I’d go in life.

We’ve all envisioned what we believed the future held for us. And a lot of what we’ve imagined has come true.

But timing is everything. And therein is the source of a great deal of our frustration. Whereas God’s view is eternal, ours is limited–and we feel compelled by what we perceive to be our short “life span” here on Earth to do everything now.

But lately I’m being challenged by the Spirit of the Lord to come to a new place of authentic peace in God, not because all my dreams are coming true at the rate I expected, but because I’m coming to know Him (see Is. 26:3). In fact, I’m just beginning to know that I know that He loves me and can be trusted to open opportunities for me that are the best.

This is why I’m grateful to Stormie Omartian for her ministry. Stormie calls us to do “first things first,” to cultivate a relationship of devotion to the Lord through prayerful communion with Him.

It’s not a new concept but one we can easily leave in the dust as we rush out the door to accomplish everything on our agendas. This performance mentality often has led me into confusion about whether to hitch the wagon behind the horse or, well, you know.

I’m still learning that the purpose for my life is not to be more greatly desired than Christ Himself, who is my life. Our lives have to be centered in Him. We should be loving Him more and experiencing His love and acceptance.

In this season of life, I’m making an effort to work on my “marriage” to my Maker. It’s been only a short time, but already I’ve noticed that my devotion has deepened, and even when duties draw me away from my quiet times with Him, I am more confident than I’ve ever been that He goes with me.

Are you serving God with the right motive?

When God called me into ministry, I had a full-time job and was making good money. We had a nice, comfortable suburban lifestyle, but I was miserable on the inside because I was religious and didn’t have a deep, personal relationship with God.

After an encounter with the Holy Spirit in 1976, my life really changed. I began developing an intimate relationship with God, and I wanted to help other people experience what I was experiencing. To do that, I had to quit my job so I would have the time I needed to study the Word of God.

I thought, Well, I’ve made this big sacrifice quitting my job, so surely we’ll be blessed with miraculous provision and our finances will increase supernaturally! But for the next six years, we suffered financially. I shopped at garage sales, clipped every coupon I could find and took a calculator with me when I went grocery shopping.

During this time, I taught a Bible study in our home for about five years, which I didn’t get paid to do. This cost us, too. We cleaned the house each week and provided refreshments (and toilet paper).

I reached a breaking point one day after hearing a testimony from my pastor. He had received an unexpected financial blessing from a speaking engagement he had done. I was tired of hearing about other people’s breakthroughs and felt like we had been so faithful, yet there was no breakthrough for us.

So I cried about it for a while and then, by the grace of God, I made a decision and declared: “God, I am going to tithe and give offerings until the day I die whether I ever see anything come from it or not!”

I believe with all my heart this was a test for me to see why I was really doing what I was doing because having right, godly motives is part of what develops an excellent spirit in Christians.

I’m glad now that God didn’t let me get paid to teach the Bible study in my home because if I had I might have been motivated to do it for the money, not wholeheartedly for the Lord.

There’s been a lot of teaching and preaching that says, “Do this and you’ll get that.” And it’s true that we reap what we sow (see Gal. 6:7). But what about having a pure heart that says, “I want to do the right thing because it’s right and it glorifies God”?

The truth is, if we’re doing right things just to get something, our motives are selfish and self-centered. Wholehearted commitment to God is not selfish or self-centered—it’s excellence!

Daniel is a man in the Bible who is described as having an “excellent spirit.” He lived to glorify God with his life, no matter what it cost him. “Then this Daniel was distinguished above the presidents … because an excellent spirit was in him, and the king thought to set him over the whole realm” (Dan. 6:3The Amplified Bible).

Daniel loved God and was unwavering in his commitment to serve Him. As a result, God gave him favor with the king, which led to his promotion over the other leaders in the land. But his commitment to God was tested.

The leaders didn’t like that the king favored Daniel. So they manipulated the king to sign a decree that prohibited anyone from praying to any god other than the king for 30 days. Violating the decree meant being thrown into a den of lions (see Dan. 6:4-7).

Daniel didn’t cave in to this decree—he was more concerned about keeping his commitment to God. If you know the story, you know God protected him and was glorified in the end.

I want to encourage you to live with an excellent spirit. Don’t live a shallow life, just doing what you feel like doing or being self-centered. Be determined to really live for God. As you do, you’ll fulfill your true purpose and glorify God in everything you do.

Simply stated, biblical fasting is refraining from food for a spiritual purpose. When you eliminate eating from your diet for a number of days, your spirit becomes both uncluttered by the things of this world and amazingly sensitive to the things of God.

The Bible records numerous circumstances under which God’s people fasted. The duration of the fasts recorded by Scripture, as well as the type of fasting undertaken, differed a great deal.

Moses fasted 40 days when he received God’s law (seeDeut. 9:9). Joshua and the elders of Israel fasted for about 12 hours after Israel’s armies were defeated at Ai (see Josh. 7:6). The apostle Paul fasted 14 days while he was in peril (see Acts 27:33-36). Jesus fasted too—for 40 days before beginning His ministry (see Matt. 4:2).

These examples indicate that the duration of a fast often has a lot to do with what a person is facing. They also exemplify the three types of fasts modeled in Scripture—absolute, normal and partial.

Absolute. This is an extreme fast that should be done only for very short periods of time. You take in nothing—no food, no water. It should be attempted only with medical supervision.

Normal. No food of any kind is eaten for a certain number of days. You do drink water—and plenty of it. Depending on the length of a normal fast, you may also choose to drink clear broth and juices to maintain your strength.

Partial. A partial fast can be interpreted many ways but usually involves giving up particular foods and drinks for a time. The most commonly used example is recorded in Daniel 1:11-14, in which Daniel and his three companions ate only vegetables and drank only water for 10 days and, as a result, were blessed more than the king’s men, who ate the richer, royal diet.

There is no real formula for determining the amount of time you should fast or the type of fast that’s best for you. It is important, however, not to get bogged down in the details. Here are a few suggestions for keeping it simple:

Begin with one day—from sunrise to sunset. As a teenager, I would fast all day on Sunday until after church. It made me so much more spiritually sensitive to God. Don’t start with more than you can handle. There is no need to be heroic and attempt a 40-day fast if you have never fasted a day in your life. Just start.

Make it mean something to you, or don’t do it. If it doesn’t mean anything to you, it won’t mean anything to God. Without being combined with prayer and the Word, fasting is little more than dieting.

Fasting, although primarily spiritual in nature, has numerous physical benefits as well.

Fasting gives your body time to heal. We Americans regularly consume and assimilate chemical preservatives, coloring, stabilizers, flavorings and other additives from our foods that build up in our bodies and cause illness and disease. Periodic fasts flush out the poisons. Plus, fasting gives your whole digestive system a break, and that is very healthy for you.

Fasting helps to control the appetite. Fasting can break an addiction to junk food as well as the power of an uncontrollable appetite. Some people bound by nicotine, alcohol and drugs have found freedom from their addictions through fasting.

Medical research has shown that fasting also sharpens your mental process and relieves anxiety and tension. It lowers your blood pressure and can lower your cholesterol, and also aids and improves your sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell.

Headaches are one unpleasant physical symptom that often accompanies fasting—but the good news is, they are temporary. People have told me that the devil gave them a headache while they fasted. More likely, it was simply their bodies getting rid of the toxins that had built up over time.

If you will drink plenty of water, or water and juice, your body will flush out the poisons, and you’ll reach what can only be described as a “sweet place” in the fast.

Be aware that whenever you fast for at least three days, your digestive system shuts down. It can be unpleasant. Some people feel sluggish or can’t sleep—and, let’s face it, you are going to get hungry!

I encourage you to avoid all those food ads on TV while you’re fasting. During an extended fast one time, I looked forward every night to watching a Pizza Hut commercial on TV. It became a highlight of my fast until one night I dreamed I was enjoying a delicious slice of Pizza Hut’s pan pizza—and suddenly I woke up to find nearly half my pillowcase stuffed into my mouth!

When I’ve been on extended fasts, I’ve seen no angels and heard no violins during the first few days while my body emptied itself of toxins. In fact, I didn’t feel much like focusing on prayer and the Word. But without fail, things soon cleared up, and I found a deeper place in God.

Regardless of how long you choose to fast, try to drink at least one gallon of purified water throughout the first day. Avoid tap water and drink purified or distilled water instead.

Water flushes the toxins from your system, which helps you get off to a good start. It also makes you feel full.

Above all, keep in mind that fasting is a continual prayer before God. There may be days when heaven opens and your heart is prompted to deep times of prayer.

There also may be days when your energy is sapped and you just cannot focus in prayer at all. At those times, don’t condemn yourself. God sees your sacrifice.

Each year I encourage the members of my church to join in a 21-day fast. If in less than one month you can be a new person, why not take a radical step of faith?

We have only one life to give to God—let’s get control of our bodies and go for God with the best we have.

How would you feel if your spouse were unfaithful? They made vows that they would love, honor, and cherish you, yet you come home from work and catch them in the midst of an adulterous situation. And when you confront them with the question, “How could you do this to me?” their response is a statement calmly made of, “But, honey, you know my heart,” implying that although they are guilty of adultery and the taking of your love and their vows for granted, that you should just overlook their shameful, disrespectful behavior because down deep they really do love you. Would their words make you feel any better? Would this so-called “heart love” match the blatantly disobedient behavior of the one who is your spouse? Of course not! Yet every single day men and women who claim to be the bride of Christ justify their unfaithfulness towards the Lord (their sinful behavior) with those five little words, “But God knows my heart.”

Here are some real-life examples of times when people have used this “but God knows my heart” line to justify their sin:

– Here we have people who lie, cheat, or scam to get ahead at work or to benefit in other ways:

“I know that lying is a sin, but my boss expects it in certain situations. I have to lie or I might lose my job. Well, God understands because he knows my heart.”

“If I fill out these medical forms with my true status (newly married), I will lose my welfare benefits. I guess I’d better keep that information to myself and not tell them the truth. Oh, well, God knows my heart.”

– Here are examples of men and women who justify the reasons they are fornicating:

“I’d love to get married, but he doesn’t want to. Anyway, I’ve invested this many years in this relationship. It’s like we’re almost married. I’m sure God will forgive me. He knows my heart.”

“If I get married to my live-in boyfriend, I will lose my widow social security benefits. I want to do right, but because of ‘the system’ I can’t. But I know that God understands. He knows my heart.”

“I’m scared to get married again because I was burned by my first wife in an ugly divorce. Maybe I will some day if my girlfriend signs a prenuptial agreement. In the meantime, we will just move in together and see how it goes. God knows my heart.”

– Here are people who chose society’s standards of right and wrong instead of God’s standards of purity:

“As a professed Christian actress, some people might talk when I take on this R-rated role that requires nudity. Oh, well, I made my decision based on that still small voice inside. And I don’t care what people say, God knows my heart.”

“I don’t feel comfortable being at this concert (or party or club or movie) with my unsaved friends and taking part in this worldly behavior, but I want people to like me. I want to fit in. Hey, God understands that it’s hard being a teen, and He knows my heart.”

Friend, do any of the above-mentioned real-life scenarios sound like behavior that you have engaged in? Are you making excuses for your sin or holding on to a lifestyle that a true lover of the Lord should not be holding on to? Have you been unfaithful to your Bridegroom, Jesus Christ? Are you using God’s mercy and grace as a license to sin?

Yes, God does know your heart. God knows your heart even better than you do. And although you may fool yourself with this irrational thinking that somehow your actions and your heart are not connected, God is not fooled. His Word says this about you and your behavior:

Ezekiel 33:31, “And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.”

Matthew 15:8, “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoreth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”

Jeremiah 13:10, “This evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing.”

Luke 6:45, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil.”

What are you bringing forth? Good fruit or evil fruit? Our ACTIONS show where our love lies. If in your heart you truly loved the Lord, you would repent of your sinful ways and live a life in obedience to your Bridegroom, Jesus Christ. God’s law is written on every man’s heart. You know right from wrong, yet you choose sin over God’s will for your life. Then you justify your sin by making excuses or pretending that in spite of your actions, you love the Lord. What utter nonsense! The verses below show how someone who truly loved the Lord would live:

John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

1 John 2:3, “And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”

1 John 2:6, “He that saith he abideth in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.”

1 Corinthians 10:21, “Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.”

3 John 1:11, “Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.”

So, Reader, are you truly of God? And if you are claiming to have been born again and saved, then why are you still living like an old unregenerate sinner? Is that man or woman that you are fornicating with your idol? They must be, why else would you put pleasing them before pleasing the Lord? Are those lies that you are telling helping you to build a bigger, better golden calf to trust in? They must be, why else would you be so unwilling to speak the truth? Are those friends that you are compromising your Christian walk for worthy of the altar that you have placed them on? Obviously your answer is yes, or else you would not be hiding your Christian light in order to blend in with them.

You can’t be a 70% Christian or even a 95% Christian. If Jesus is your Lord and Savior, you should be obeying Him 100%. Otherwise, you are just engaging in meaningless lip service. The Lord wants, no, He deserves a chaste bride, a righteous bride, someone who loves and cherishes Him above all else. You should not offer to Him your sloppy hand-me-down love. You should be ashamed to call yourself a Christian while your life resembles that of an unsaved heathen. God’s Word shows us what we must do and how we are instructed to live:

2 Corinthians 7:1, “Having therefore these promises, dearly belovedlet us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

Deuteronomy 10:12, “…What doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, to keep the commandments of the Lord, and his statutes…”

Galatians: 5:24, “And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”

1 Thessalonians 5:22, “Abstain from all appearance of evil.”

1 Peter 2:11, “Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;”

Romans 12:2“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Ephesians 5:11, “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”

Acts 8:22, “Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.”

Romans 6:11-12, “Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.”

1 Samuel 12:24, “Only fear the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider how great things he hath done for you.”

It could not be any clearer than that! Our Bridegroom who has done such great things for us should receive our utmost in return. So in conclusion, Friend, if your heart has been convicted and you know that you have not been living as you ought, it is not too late for you, but you need to make some changes. You need to be willing to give up the sins that you have been engaging in. Repent and ask the Lord to forgive you. Yes, you might have to sacrifice that relationship with that girlfriend or boyfriend. Yes, you might have to stand up to your boss. Yes, you might lose out on some money or worldly benefit. But if Jesus Christ is truly the One whom you love above all else, it should not be hard to let go of the people, possessions, or lifestyle which is causing you to sin in the first place.

And in the future, don’t ever just go by how you feel. Don’t just “listen to your heart” when deciding what things are good and right because you can deceive yourself into believing what is evil is good. Always look to God’s Word. God has blessed us with instructions on exactly how He wants us to live. Read the Holy Bible and obey what you read. And don’t judge a situation by the examples of others. Don’t listen to your friends. Don’t even think that your pastor has all the answers. God’s Holy Word is the only source you need or that you can rely on.

Matthew 15:19, “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.”

Proverbs 16:25, “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”

Jeremiah 17:9, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

Proverbs 28:26, “He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.”

Jeremiah 17:5, “Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord.”

Dear Tech Support:

I am desperate for some help. I recently upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0 and found that the new program began unexpected child processing and also took up a lot of space and valuable resources. This wasn’t mentioned in the product brochure.

In addition Wife 1.0 installs itself into all other programs and launches during system initialisation where it monitors all other system activity.

Applications such as Boys Night Out 2.5, and Golf 5.3 no longer run and crash the system whenever selected. Attempting to operate Sunday Football 6.3 always fails but Saturday Shopping 7.1 runs instead. I cannot seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background whilst attempting to run any of my favourite applications. I am thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0 but de-install doesn’t work on this program.

Can you please help!

Dear Joe,

This is a very common problem resulting from a basic misunderstanding.

Many men upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0 thinking that Wife 1.0 is merely a UTILITIES & ENTERTAINMENT program. Whereas Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM designed by its creator to run everything.

You are unlikely to be able to purge Wife 1.0 and still convert back to Girlfriend 7.0 as Wife 1.0 is not designed to do this and it is impossible to de-install, delete or purge the program files from the system once installed.

Some people have tried to install Girlfriend 8.0 or Wife 2.0, but have
ended up with even more problems. (See in manual under Alimony/Child Support and Solicitors Fees). Having Wife 1.0 installed myself I recommend you keep it installed and deal with the difficulties as best you can.

When any faults or problems occur, whatever you think has caused them, you must run the C: IAPOLOGISE program and avoid attempting to use the *Esc-key. It may be necessary to run C: I APOLOGISE a number of times, but hopefully eventually the operating system will return to normal.

Wife 1.0 although a very high maintenance program can be very rewarding. To get the most out of it consider buying additional software such as Flowers 2.0 and Chocolates 5.0.

Do not under any circumstances install Secretary (Short Skirt version) as this is not a supported application for Wife 1.0 and the system will almost certainly crash.

Best of luck!

NOTE: This is a detailed study of the place of hell found in the Bible. It is fairly lengthy. I would strongly encourage you to carefully and prayerfully read it all. It could be the most important words you’ve ever read.
Anyone familiar with the Bible realizes the Lord Jesus repeatedly warns of a place called hell. You can’t travel very far in the Gospels without crossing paths with hell. The Bible’s descriptions and careful details of hell plainly depict a real place. Someone that doubts Jesus Christ believed in hell concedes either gross ignorance or deliberate dishonesty. Billy Graham writes in his book, Storm Warning“One cannot read the Bible and miss the references to hell. They are unmistakable in the teachings of Christ Himself.” (p. 263)

Throughout history, man has searched for a magical hammer to chip away at the place of hell. They’ve used mind and madness trying to douse the place called hell. Some have quietly declared hell as a mere state of existence. Others have mystically obscured hell as nothing but symbolism or religious fantasy. Others have taught hell as an endless termination or annihilation. Today’s Bible-rejecting churches bury hell deep in the murky mire of Hebrew and Greek word games, or self-serving scholarship. Whatever the method or whatever the message – the flames of hell are cooling rapidly. The first step in extinguishing the flames of hell starts with removing the place of hell.

Bishop Wordsworth, warned years ago of Satan’s attack on the place of hell:

“There is nothing that Satan more desires than that we should believe that he does not exist, and that there is no such a place as hell, and no such things as eternal torments. He whispers all this into our ears, and he exults when he hears a layman, and much more when he hears a clergyman, deny these things, for then he hopes to make them and others his victims.”
(Wordsworth, Bishop. Sermons on Future Rewards and Punishments, 36)

On July 28, 1999 Pope John Paul II used the mighty pen of religion to decree that hell was no longer a place, but simply a “state.”

Rather than a place, hell indicates the state of those who freely and definitively separate themselves from God, the source of all life and joy. This is how the Catechism of the Catholic Church summarizes the truths of faith on this subject: “To die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God’s merciful love means remaining separated from him for ever by our own free choice. This state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed is called ‘hell’” (n. 1033).

Others have quenched hell using the deadly and deceitful duo of psychology and philosophy. The Los Angeles Times writes in, “Why a Fiery Hell Gets Cold Shoulder”:

“Hell’s fall from fashion indicates how key portions of Christian theology have been influenced by a secular society that stresses individualism over authority and the human psyche over moral absolutes. The rise of psychology, the philosophy of existentialism and the consumer culture have all dumped buckets of water on hell.”
(Why a fiery hell gets cold shoulder, Mike Anton and William Lobdell Los Angeles Times Service, Jul. 06, 2002

In the same article, The Los Angeles Times, also states the once believed place of hell is now a “state of the soul”:

“Where once hell was viewed as a literal, geographic location, it is more often seen now as a state of the soul.”
(Why a fiery hell gets cold shoulder, Mike Anton and William Lobdell Los Angeles Times Service, Jul. 06, 2002

InfoPlease online encyclopedia writes under the definition for hell:

“Many Christian churches now regard hell more as a state of being than a place.

Even the popular evangelist Billy Graham sadly attempts to douse the literal fire of hell. In his book, Storm Warning, he states, “Jesus used this symbol [fire] over and over. I believe that it means a thirst for God that is never quenched.” (p. 263)

U.S. News and World Report, in a cover story titled, “Hell, A New Vision of the Netherworld” (Jan. 31, 2000), wrote that in 1997, 48% believed hell was a real place – but just three years later, that number dropped an astonishing 14 points to only 34%! The article said, “Edwards [Jonathan] would scarcely recognize the hell of today. After decades of near obscurity, the netherworld has taken on a new image: more of a deep funk than a pit of fire.” (p. 45) The article also states that 53 percent now view hell as simply “an anguished state of existence eternally separated from God”. This is the same teaching promoted by Billy Graham and Pope John Paul II.

The attack on the place of hell is widespread. And it is effective. . .

While man ridicules and redefines hell – the Bible speaks. Despite 6000 years of opposition, God’s Word continues the message of hell. It’s impossible to read the Bible and not realize the Bible describes a literal place called hell. You may reject it. You may refuse to believe it. But you can not ignore it. It is there.

In Luke 16, the Lord Jesus Christ tells of a terrifying place called hell. The rich man in hell asks Father Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his five brethren, lest they also come to “this place” of torment.

For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Luke 16:28

People attempt to deny the “place” of hell in Luke 16 with the teaching that Jesus is speaking a fictitious “parable,” not an actual event. But Jesus never names the people in parables. And in Luke 16, Jesus says, “there was a certain beggar named Lazarus. . .” Jesus Christ begins Luke 16 with the definitive statement, “There WAS a certain rich man. . .” Luke 16 is no parable.

19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
Luke 16:19-20

When the Lord Jesus speaks in “parables,” He later explains the parable. In Luke 16, the Lord Jesus gives no “parable” explanation. Luke 16:19-31 stands as told – a real event.

You’ll notice Jesus Christ calls Lazarus by his name, but not the rich man. John 10:3, the Lord Jesus says, “. . . he calleth his own sheep by name. . .” Matthew 7:23, He tells the unsaved, “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” The rich man in hell was just “. . . a certain rich man. . .” The Lord did not know him. He knew of him, but He did not know him.

In John 14, the Lord Jesus tells His disciples about the place of heaven. He instructs His disciples that He will go and “prepare a place” for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
John 14:3

Heaven is a “prepared place.” It is no accident. It is not a state of reality. The Lord Jesus prepared a real place for His children. The Lord Jesus says in Matthew 25:41 that hell also is a “prepared” place.

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Matthew 25:41

Hell is a prepared place. It is a “prepared place” of judgment and wrath. Heaven is a prepared place gleaming with the love of God. Hell is a prepared place burning with the wrath of God. Hell is as real as Heaven. Hell is as much the work of a Holy God as is Heaven. If there is no hell – there is no heaven.

It is worth noting that hell was not a part of the original creation. Genesis 1:1 reads, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Genesis chapters 1-3 contain no mention of hell. The creation of hell apparently came as a direct result of the fall of Lucifer. The Lord Jesus told us in Mathew 25:41, hell was “prepared for the devil and his angels.” Any suggestion that hell was the “perfect” will of God quickly dissolves “In the beginning. . .” of the Genesis creation.

Every word the Lord Jesus spoke about hell clearly describes a real place.

In Matthew 13, Mark 9, and Luke 12, the Lord Jesus says the unsaved are “cast INTO” or “go INTO” a place – a furnace or a fire. Clearly, He is not referring to a state of existence, but a real place of fire that lost people are “cast into.”

41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. . . .
. . .
49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,
50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 13

43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Mark 9

But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
Luke 12:5

The Bible employs the phrase “cast into” hell [fire] 14 times:

cast into the fire Psalm 140:10
cast into the fire Matt 3:10
cast into hell Matt 5:29
cast into hell Matt 5:30
cast into the fire Matt 7:19
cast into everlasting fire Matt 18:8
cast into hell fire Matt 18:9
cast into hell Mark 9:45
cast into hell fire Mark 9:47
cast into the fire Luke 3:9
cast into hell Luke 12:5
cast into the lake of fire and brimstone Rev 20:10
cast into the lake of fire Rev 20:14
cast into the lake of fire Rev 20:15

The Bible uses the phrase “cast into” 44 times, and every time, it refers to a real, literal place. The following two scriptures are examples of “cast into” referring to a literal place.

And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
Exodus 1:22

Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
Matthew 4:12

The following scriptures describe hell using words that undeniably reference a real location, such as, “in”, “into” or “to”—again, plainly indicating a real place.

in this flame Luke 16:24
in hell Psalm 16;10
into hell Psalm 55:15
in hell Psalm 139:8
in the depths of hell Proverbs 9:18
down to hell Ezekiel 31:16
down into hell Ezekiel 31:17
down to hell Ezekiel 32:27
body in hell Matt 10;28
brought down to hell Matt 11:23
in hell Luke 16:23
in hell Acts 2:27
in hell Acts 2:31
in the fire Matt 13:40
cast them into the fire John 15:6

In Matthew 5, the Lord Jesus warns of being physically and bodily cast into hell. The only valid explanation of Matthew 5 is that Jesus is describing an actual event. Any other reading completely destroys the text.

29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
Matthew 5:29-30

Scores of scriptures confirm hell is a real place. There remains no other conclusion. To read otherwise, demands either willful misinterpretation or the deliberate distortion of the scriptures.

Hell is a major topic in the Word of God. And it should be. The Lord Jesus Christ in the New Testament spends much time warning about hell. Jesus preached about hell more than any other subject. The Old Testament does not overlook the place of hell. The Old Testament contains over 67 direct references to hell. In the King James Bible, the word “hell” occurs 23 times in the New Testament – but 31 times in the Old Testament. The Old Testament includes some of the clearest and most horrifying pictures of hell.

The following scriptures are examples of “hell” in the Old Testament.

For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Psalm 16:10

Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
Psalm 55:15

But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.
Proverbs 9:18

16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth.
17 They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword; and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.
Ezekiel 31:16-17

Hell is just as real as heaven or the sea. In Psalms 139, David compares hell with heaven and the sea.

7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
Psalm 139:7-9

39 times the Old Testament calls hell “the pit.” It never uses the plural “pits” or the indefinite “a pit,” but always the singular, specific place, “the pit.” The wording, “the pit” refers to one particular place.

Isaiah 14 describes the fall of Lucifer. Isaiah 14:15 reveals “the pit” is hell, “. . . thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.”

12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
Isaiah 14:12-15

Ezekiel 31:16 also confirms “the pit” is hell.

I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit:. .
Ezekiel 31:16

As we can see, the scriptures teach a real place called hell. But the Bible does not stop there. The Lord gives careful details about the place called hell. The precise information the Lord provides dumbfounds many. They refuse to believe the simple Word of God. Many recklessly dig through Greek and Hebrew words searching for a morsel of bread. And like Esau, they sell their birthright, the Word of God (1 Peter 1:23), for one morsel of meat.

Evangelist and radio-preacher, Oliver Greene understands the Bible’s teaching about the place of hell.

“Hell is a place—not a state of mind; and the terms used in the Bible to describe hell prove this statement beyond any shadow of doubt.”
(Greene, Oliver B. Hell, 1973, The Gospel Hour: Greenville p. 25)

Amen, Brother Greene. . . Amen

Note: Our study on the location of hell deals with the present location of hell. The Lake of Fire described in Revelation 20:14 will replace the current place of hell.

The Bible does not describe an unknown, mystic place of hell. The Word of God gives specific and careful details concerning hell. The Bible even provides the geographical location of hell. As the Lord reveals the location of hell, He challenges us to examine the evidence.

Despite man’s massive efforts to disprove the Word of God, no fact has ever been proven contrary to the Word of God. Not one. Every discovery of true science, history, and archeology, agree with the Word of God. The place of hell is no different. In our next chapter, we shall examine the place of hell under the skeptical microscope of verifiable science.

As we study the following scriptures, I strongly encourage the reader to carefully read along in the King James Bible. Look up the verses. Read them. They may be the most important words you will ever read. If you have a different Bible version, you will see a deliberate attack on hell. (We will examine the perversion of Hell in a later chapter.)

The Lord openly gives us the location of hell.

In Acts 2, the Apostle Peter preaches the Holy Spirit filled message of Pentecost. In verse 31 he says, ” . . . seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in HELL.

When Jesus Christ died on the cross, His soul descended into hell. To deny this fact, (as many do), is to deny the scriptures. What Jesus did in hell may be open for discussion, but the fact He went there is not. Where the scriptures speak—the critics remain silent.

In Matthew 12:40, Jesus Christ tells the apostles the geographical location where He will be after His death.

For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly: so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Matthew 12:40

Some Christians teach “the heart of the earth” signifies the grave. But Jesus is not referring to the grave. Nor is He talking about His body. His body was not in the earth, nor in the ground, but in a “tomb which he had hewn out in the rock.” It is not His body because His body was not “in the earth.” The Bible distinctly and plainly states that the body of Jesus Christ was in a rock – not in the earth.

And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
Matthew 27:60

Another reason why Matthew 12:40 can not mean merely His body placed in the grave because the body is buried only six feet in the ground–not in the heart of the earth. The only accurate explanation is that the soul of the Lord Jesus Christ descended into the heart of the earth—exactly as the Bible said.

John Gill, in his popular, Exposition of the Entire Bible, acknowledges the difficulty of reconciling the “heart of the earth” in Matthew 12:40 with the “rock” tomb of the Lord Jesus. But rather than accepting the text as it reads, Gill rashly decides “inside the rock” satisfies Matthew’s “heart of the earth.”

“That Christ means himself by the ‘son of man,’ there is no reason to doubt; and his being laid in a tomb, dug out of a rock, is sufficient to answer this phrase, ‘the heart of the earth,’ in distinction from the surface of it; . . .”
(John Gill’s, Exposition of the Entire Bible, Matthew 12:40)

Because of the importance to firmly resolve “the heart of the earth” could not be the body of Jesus in the grave, let us observe the women’s visit at the tomb (sepulchre) on resurrection morning. In Luke 24, after the stone was rolled away, the women walked into the tombObviously, this was no “hole in the ground” located in the “heart of the earth.” You do not “walk” into a hole in the ground – you “fall” into it.

1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
Luke 24:1-3

A careful reading of the women’s arrival at the grave in Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24 and John 20 completely debunks the teaching that His body was in the “heart of the earth.”

It is amazing (and appalling) the effort some Christians exert to twist and shrewdly reject the scriptures. They will not accept what the Lord says. So they “interpret” for us what God really meant to say. As someone acutely asked, “If God didn’t mean what He said–then why didn’t He say what He meant?”

Author J. Sidlow Baxter, in The Other Side of Death, furnishes us a classic example of “interpreting” what the Lord really meant in his massacre of Ephesians 4:9 and Matthew 12:40:

“No one would argue that by ‘the heart of the earth’ our Lord meant no more than the sepulchre in which his corpse was deposited . . . Neither our Lord nor Paul meant that hades [hell] is a ‘lower part’ inside the solid earth itself. They meantthat the grave, deep-dug in the earth, represented that unseen ‘deep’ which lies just beyond.”
(Baxter, J. Sidlow. The Other Side of Death, :Tyndale House: Wheaton 1987 p. 34)

Baxter’s comments about Ephesians 4:9 and Matthew 12:40 are disingenuous and false. The standard depth of the grave is a mere six feet down. Considering the earth’s diameter is over 8,000 miles, to imply six feet is “deep-dug” and in the “lower parts of the earth” is laughable. And we have already verified, the body of the Lord Jesus Christ was not placed in a “grave, deep-dug in the earth” but “in a tomb rock.” Mr. Baxter also states a scientific error. The earth is not “solid,” but filled with a liquid “lake of fire and brimstone” called hell.

Ephesians 4:9 gives us another account where the Lord descended after His death. Ephesians 4:9 plainly reads that Jesus Christ “descended into the lower parts of the earth” before “He ascended in heaven.” Again, the “lower parts of the earth” is not the grave. Ephesians 4:9 defines a specific part of the earth, not just in the earth, but “the lower parts of the earth.”

Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
Ephesians 4:9

Ephesians 4:9 does not passively say “His body” was placed into the lower parts of the earth. But the verse actively states, “he (not his body) also descended first into the lower parts of the earth.” The Lord Jesus, Himself [He] actively descendedinto the lower parts of the earth. The first part of Ephesians 4:9 reads, the Lord Jesus actively and literally ascended into heaven, but first He actively and literally descended into the lower parts of the earth.

Bodies do not “descend” into the grave. Someone else places the body in the grave – the body does not descend. The body is dead and motionless. To “descend” requires the action of moving or motion. Webster’s Dictionary defines descending as:

1. To move or pass from a higher to a lower place; to move, come or go downwards; to fall; to sink; to run or flow down; applicable to any kind of motion or of body.”

1 Thessalonians 4:16 describes the Second Advent of the Lord Jesus as “descending” from heaven. This event is an active, visible moving of the Lord Jesus Christ.

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1 Thessalonians 4:16

The body does not descend into the grave, it is simply laid there.

59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 And laid it in his own new tomb. . .
Matthew 27:59-60

The Bible presents many verses that emphatically locate hell in the center of the earth. And not vague verses that are open to self-interpretations, but clear and precise references. For a Christian to reject or disregard this extremely important Bible fact is inexcusable. Until the last fifty years, most Christians knew hell was a real place of fire in the center of the earth. With the murky confusion sown by the plethora of new Bible versions and Christian relativism, the literal place of hell is classified as archaic fantasy. Virtually every modern book on hell consists of nothing more than murky mud wallowing in the mire of Greek and Hebrew word studies. And yet, the simple Word of God gives us crystal clear details of hell.

The following verses designate the physical location of hell. The direction of hell always references down or beneath. The Bible never refers to hell in any other direction.

Eleven times the Bible reads the direction of hell is “down.”

“. . . let them go down quick into hell. . .”
Psalm 55:15

Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.
Proverbs 5:5

Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

. . .when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit:. . .
Ezekiel 31:16

. . . them that go down into the pit.
Ezekiel 32:18

. . . them that go down to the pit.
Ezekiel 32:24

. . . them that go down to the pit:. . .
Ezekiel 32:25

. . . them that go down to the pit.
Ezekiel 32:29

. . . them that go down to the pit.
Ezekiel 32:30

Two times, the Bible states hell is “beneath.”

The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.
Proverbs 15:24

Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
Isaiah 14:9

In Isaiah 5:15, the Bible records that people “descend” into hell. Descend means “To move or pass from a higher to a lower place;”

Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.
Isaiah 5:14

Twice the Bible states that people “descend” into the pit.

When I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit. . . .
Ezekiel 26:20

. . . them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth.
Ezekiel 31:16

Seven times the Bible distinctly locates hell or the pit in the “lower” or “nether” [nether means lower] parts of the earth. Ezekiel 26:20 and 31:16 also record people “descend” into the pit. To descend requires downward action— to the nether parts of the earth–not simply laid in the grave. This is not the body or the grave.

But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
Psalm 63:9

When I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, with the people of old time, and shall set thee in the low parts of the earth, in places desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I shall set glory in the land of the living;
Ezekiel 26:20

The following three verses in Ezekiel 31 (verses 14, 16 and 18) that reference “trees” are referring to men and kings, in particular the judgement of Pharaoh (verse 2) and the Assyrian (verse 3).

To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.
Ezekiel 31:14

I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth.
Ezekiel 31:16

To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? yet shalt thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.
Ezekiel 31:18

Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her, and the daughters of the famous nations, unto the nether parts of the earth, with them that go down into the pit. . .
Ezekiel 32:18

There is Elam and all her multitude round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living; yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit.
Ezekiel 32:24

Job 11 uses the comparative phrases “as high as heaven” and “deeper than hell.” The comparison of “deeper” obviously refers to “descending far downward” while “as high as heaven” goes in the opposite direction or upwards.

7 Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?
8 It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?
Job 11:7-8

Amos 9:2 is very interesting. Amos makes the astonishing statement, “Though they DIG into hell. . .” Webster’s Dictionary defines “dig” as “To open and break or turn up the earth with a spade or other sharp instrument.” Amos certainly believes hell is in this earth. Either you discount Amos as foolish metaphor or clearly, inside this earth contains a lake of fire burning with suffering souls of the damned.

Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down:
Amos 9:2

Sidlow Baxter, in The Other Side of Death, writes about the Hebrew word “sheol”:

“Sheol is never spoken of as digged by man. ..”
(Baxter, J. Sidlow. The Other Side of Death, :Tyndale House: Wheaton 1987 p. 180)

Do you know what the Hebrew word for “hell” is in Amos 9:2—”Though they dig into hell”? It is “sheol.” Baxter shows how Christians disregard the simple text, in this case, both the English and Hebrew, to prove their own private mis-interpretation.

Reading the scores of precise and clear scriptures the Lord provides, how can Christians who have even casually read the Bible, deny the location of hell?

But they do. . .

In the popular book, Whatever Happened to Hell?, author John Blanchard, incredibly writes:

“The Bible gives many different descriptions of hell and consistently refers to it as a specific place . . . As to its location, we are given no details—though perhaps there is at least one important clue. . . This word “outside” is the one that Jesus used frequently when speaking about hell and almost certainly lays to rest the notion that hell is located somewhere in the center of the earth.” …
As far as its location is concerned, we have almost nothing to go on. Not even statements which say that heaven is ‘above’ and hell is ‘beneath’ tell us very much. The clearest clue we have is that hell is ‘outside’.”
(Blanchard, John. What Happened to Hell?, Crossway Books Wheaton, Illinois 1995 pp. 131-132)

How can anyone who has read the Bible truthfully say, “As to its location, we are given no details. . .”? The answer is simple. The human psyche of mankind, even among Christians, refuses to accept the reality of hell. If they ignore the evidence long enough and loud enough, maybe it is not really there. But it is there. . .

As far as Blanchard’s assertion that “the clearest clue we have is that hell is ‘outside’”–completely ignores scores and scores of clear scriptures, in favor of three “outer” references (Matthew 8:12, 22:13, 25:30). How can Blanchard write, “. . . Not even statements which say that heaven is ‘above’ and hell is ‘beneath’ tell us very much?” Why don’t they? Why did God write them? Over a hundred verses describe hell as “down”; “in the heart of the earth”; “beneath”; or “lower parts of the earth” and yet that doesn’t “tell us very much!” How can a man stand in such judgment of the Word of God by telling us God’s Word does “not tell us very much”? No wonder they ripped the Bible from our schools — preachers have been ripping it apart for years.

The three verses in the Bible that mention “outer darkness” plainly refer to earthly judgments during the millennium. Not hell. Here are the verses:

Matthew 8:10-12, says, “That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.” The “sitting down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob” occurs during the millennium. The “kingdom of heaven” refers to the earthly millennial reign.

10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 8:10-12

Matthew 22:10-12 has someone (Friend) walking into a wedding without the proper garment (salvation). Obviously, no one can “die” and casually “walk” into heaven, but they can “walk” during the millennium into the Lord’s presence. Again, we are plainly dealing with the earthly millennium.

10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 22:10-12

The last “outer” occurs in Matthew 25:28-31. The context of (verse 31), “When the Son of man shall come in his glory. . . then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:”—no question is the millennium. Verses 28-29 teach “earthly rewards” by working and talents. Again, this can only be the millennium.

28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
Matthew 25:28-31

Aren’t you glad the Lord wrote the Bible where any dummy can understand it—if they’ll just read it! The Lord Jesus gives the “key” to understanding the Bible in Matthew 24:15, “. . . whoso readeth, let him understand. . .” Read and understand. Not read and say, this doesn’t “tell us very much.” What it says – is what it means.

Another sad case of Bible rejection occurs in Sidlow Baxter’s The Other Side of Death. Baxter conveniently dismisses the reality that God placed hell inside the earth with feeble human logic:

I cannot see how a vast cavern somewhere deep inside the physical earth could confine nonphysical, disembodied human spirits. If this revolving physical orb could imprison purely spiritual beings, then contradictorily enough it would burn them to nothingness by the intense internal fire which becomes increasingly hotter toward its center.”
(Baxter, Sidlow L. The Other Side of Death, Tyndale House Wheaton, 1987 p. 187)

How can a Christian reject the scriptures with the mindless reasoning of, “I cannot see. . .”? Beloved, there are many amazing things the Lord says and does that humanly speaking “I cannot see.” I cannot see the innumerable stars the Lord created. I cannot see the infinite wisdom of creation. I cannot see why He loved me so much to die for my sins. But what I cannot see with these frail physical eyes, the boundless spiritual eyes of faith can clearly see in the Word of God. Does not our Lord admonish us in 2 Corinthians 5:7 to, “walk by faith, not by sight:”?

Mr. Baxter also writes the reckless humanistic statement that the “intense internal fire” inside this earth would “burn them to nothingness.” First of all, if hell is a literal fire (which it is) it does not matter where it is located, as pertaining to “burn them to nothingness.” To follow Baxter’s explanation leads to the total elimination of the fire of hell.

I wonder has Mr. Baxter ever heard about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego of Daniel 3. These three Jewish boys were thrown alive into a furnace of literal fire that was heated seven times hotter than normal. Yet their hair was not even singed! The Bible says in Daniel 3:27, “. . .the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them.” The power of Almighty God is not limited, nor confined by the power of fire. To reject the scriptures on pathetic human rationale is disgraceful.

In Numbers chapter 16, the Lord silences all skeptics to the location of hell. You may have disputed or questioned the evidence thus far – but no further. . .

In Numbers 16, the Bible records the rebellion and destruction of Korah. As a consequence of their rebellion, the Lord opens the earth and they go down alive into the pit of hell. This is not the grave—verse 30 says, “. . . the LORD make a new thing. . .” There’s nothing “new” about “opening the earth” and going into the grave. Verse 33 also states, they “. . . went down alive into the pit. . .” Obviously, the “went down” does not refer to the shallow grave.

30 But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.
31 And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them:
32 And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.
33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.
34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.
Numbers 16:30-34

What could the Lord possibly write in the scriptures that He could make the location of hell any clearer? For you to reject the fact that God prepared hell inside this earth, you must intentionally ignore many, many plain and detailed scriptures. The evidence of the scriptures is convincing. It is conclusive. And it is real.

We’ve listed some quotes from various preachers throughout history that clearly understood hell was located in the center of the earth. These are just a few of the many quotes we could provide:Author and Bible-Believing scientist Dr. Henry Morris deduces from the scriptures, the present hell “is somewhere in the heart of the earth itself. . .” and the writers of the scriptures, “. . . certainly themselves believed hell to be real and geographically ‘beneath’ the earth’s surface.”

“So far as we can tell from Scripture, the present hell, Hades, is somewhere in the heart of the earth itself. It is also called “the pit” (Isa. 14:9, 15: Ezek. 32:18-21) and “the abyss” (Rev. 9:2). . . the Biblical descriptions are quite matter of fact. The writers certainly themselves believed hell to be real and geographically ‘beneath’ the earth’s surface. . .
(Henry M. Morris, The Bible Has the Answer, p. 220)

Both Hades and Gehenna were believed to be underground, and both were places of suffering. ”
(Russell, Jeffrey Burton, Satan, The Early Christian Tradition, London: Cornell University Press, 1981, p. 120

This star, like Wormwood, is a messenger from God, but the judgment it brings is even more terrible. It does not strike the earth or poison the waters, but with the key to the shaft of the Abyss (v. 1) opens a pit [the bottomless pit] into the very heart of the earth. From the pit, or Abyss, comes smoke like the smoke from a gigantic furnace, darkening the sun and sky
IVP New Testament Commentaries :: Revelation 9:2

“Though they dig into hell, into the centre of the earth, or the darkest recesses of it, yet thence shall my hand take them, and bring them forth to be made public monuments of divine justice.”

Though they dig into hell–though they hide ever so deeply in the earth
Jamieson, Faussett, and Brown Bible Commentary, Amos 9:2

Hades [Hell] is a place in the created system, rude, a locality beneath the earth, in which the light of the world does not shine; and as the sun does not shine in this locality, there must necessarily be perpetual darkness there. . . And in this locality there is a certain place set apart by itself, a lake of unquenchable fire. . .
Hippolytus, Against Plato, on the Cause of the Universe Ante-Nicene 5.222

By ourselves the lower regions (of Hades) are not supposed to be a bare cavity, nor some subterranean sewer of the world, but a vast deep space in the interior of the earth, and a concealed recess in its very bowels; inasmuch as we read that Christ in His death spent three days in the heart of the earth, that is, in the secret inner recess which is hidden in the earth, and enclosed by the earth, and superimposed on the abysmal depths which lie still lower down.

The wrath of God burns against them, their damnation does not slumber; the pit is prepared, the fire is made ready, the furnace is now hot, ready to receive them; the flames do now rage and glow. The glittering sword is whet, and held over them, and the pit hath opened its mouth under them. . .

At the same time it provides against that despair into which men would be otherwise plunged, when convinced of their sins, by revealing the immense love of God, the glory and grace of Christ, and inviting all to come to him, that they may obtain pardon, life, and happiness. In a word, it shows the pit of hell under men’s feet, and opens the gate and points out the way to heaven. An excerpt from a letter entitled, “Man in His Fallen Estate”
John Newton (1725 – 1807 Preacher and author of “Amazing Grace”)

“And Jesus after His return from ‘The Underwood,’ said—‘I am He that liveth, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the ‘KEYS’ (of the Gates) of hell and of death.’ Rev. 1:18. To get these ‘Keys’ Jesus had to descend into the lower parts of the earth.’ Eph. 4:9 . . . Therefore Hades or ‘The Underworld,’ must be in the ‘heart of the earth’. . .”

“The Bible locates Sheol [Hell] in the heart of the earth. . . Jesus then descended first into the lower parts of the earth (Ephesians 4:9). But we know that Jesus upon His death went into Hades [Hell]. . . And Hades [Hell] was in the lower parts of the earth.”

There is no doubt in my mind that hell is in the center of this earth. . . Amos describes hell in these words: “Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to Heaven, thence will I bring them down” (Amos 9:2). Certainly when we think of digging, we think of going down in the earth – we do not dig UP, we dig DOWN: we do not dig in the air, we dig in the dirt. Amos tells us as the Holy Spirit leads him to write – “Though they dig into hell, thence shall my hand take them.” Amos believed that hell is in the center of the earth. . . Without a shadow of a doubt, hell is in the center of this earth. . .”

I personally believe that Hell is in the heart of the earth. . . Scientists say that beneath the earth there is a boiling volcanic disturbance constantly going on in the heart of the earth. And so I personally believe Hell will be in the heart of the earth.
Dr. Jack Hyles: (1926 – 2001) Pastor of First Baptist Hammond, In and Hyles-Anderson
Dr. Jack Hyles, To Hell and Back, sermon

“Some scoff and say, ‘Where is hell?’ Well, that’s easy. It is under your feet. ‘They . . . are gone down into hell,’ Ezekiel 32:27. Hell is down under your feet, Isaiah 14:9. . . There is no doubt where hell is . . . it was in the heart of the earth where Christ went after He died. In Acts 2:31 and Acts 2:27 you are told that although Christ went through hell, He was not ‘left in hell.’ In plainer words, the Bible teaching on this is so clear that you have to go to Hebrew or Greek to get rid of it.”
